Asked For edition by Colleen L Donnelly Literature Fiction eBooks

Cletus asked for Lana when she was barely more than a child. He told her grandmother he wanted a wife, not a bride, someone to keep his house the way he wanted it and to give him sons. He got more daughters than sons, and he also got James “That boy,” the one Cletus claimed wasn’t his.
Jim Dillon wanted Lana — he always had. He just hadn’t expected her to be taken away and married to someone else so soon. Glen Morgan recognized the beauty underlying Lana’s worn features, and he stepped in where Cletus hadn’t, offering help to her and her children.
Lana grew up under Cletus’ demands, fulfilling what was expected of her — until his accusations that she’d done the unexpected and been unfaithful. Lana no longer looked at what might have been or what could be. She discovered what was most important, and she found it inside of herself.

Asked For edition by Colleen L Donnelly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I immediately liked Lana. She was dealt a very difficult life - starting out as a very young, naive wife to a controlling, angry older man, Cletus. Cletus asked for her, and she went, determined to do whatever she could to please him and be the best wife she could be. When the children started coming, she continued to please him, even when her body was broken down and hurting. She raised her children the best way she knew how. Around the kitchen table, we see Lana and her family grow and then begin to see hints of a secret hidden just under the surface. There is more to Lana than meets the eye, and as we learn more about her, she blossoms on the page. Side note I absolutely loved her oldest, Magdalena. I would love to see the author write a story centered around her.
If you like women's fiction, you will like this book. It will appeal to readers who enjoy Anita Shreve's style.
Lana was fourteen, not yet graduated from eighth grade, when Cletus asked for her.
Lana hadn't met Cletus yet, the deal was made while she was at school. "Someone asked for you," was all her grandmother said. "His name's Cletus, Cletus Paine, and he asked for you, for his wife. He'll give me a little something too, to help out now and then."
Lana knows Grandma needs someone to help out. She was old and barely able to work when Lana's mother dropped her infant girl off and left for the city. Lana wants to help her grandmother, so she marries Cletus within an hour of meeting him. She tries to be a good wife to a stranger who is old enough to be her father. She cooks, cleans, cares for livestock, and has baby nearly every year.
Asked For begins in the depths of the depression and ends in the 1950's when Lana's youngest son is grown. It's the story of a family, growing together, loving each other, supporting each other, despite the fear they all feel when Cletus enters the room. The ending is perfect, bitter sweet.
From the very beginning of Asked For, it's apparent Lana's life was not going to be the fairy tale life most little girls dream about. While she's still in 8th grade (time period 1920's), she forced to wed Cletus. He doesn't want a typical marriage with love, laughter, and equal partnership. No, he basically wants a workhorse who will bear his children....preferably sons. It's obvious by his behavior girls are subpar. Heck, he showed no love for his sons either.
Really, the only one he seemed to love was himself and that was debatable.
Lana, though, loved her children with all her heart and, in time, grew to love herself. Glen, the true gem of the story, brought much joy to their family. He wasn't her husband, nor the father to her children, but he showed more attention, love, patience, and support than Cletus.
He was their family. He was the man Cletus should've been and the man James (youngest child) mirrored.
Word of warning......
Asked For is not a fast pace, gotta keep reading until I fall asleep, story.
No, it's rather slow at times.
However I believe every aspect of her life, the good and bad, were vital in us (the readers) understanding the true depth of Lana's strength & determination to have a better life for her children.
Loved it. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down.
