Mardi and A Voyage Thither Vol I eBook Herman Melville
Let this be a review of both volumes, I and II. I found this book to be a pretty fine study in early Melville. All the good elements which he later developed into Moby Dick, are to be found here in an unpolished state. He is very at home on the sea; his characters onboard ship are very real and very alive. Storms and other ocean conditions are treated beautifully. Then come the islands. The author is less happy on shore and his story gets a bit tedious as he pursues a lost woman from one place to another in this imagined archipelago. The book's interest for me was the chance to see Melville flexing his writerly muscles, exploring various topics and sceneries. His strength will obviously be in or on the sea. His theme of endless pursuit thereon is now established. This is really quite a charming read, but there is occasionally a touch of violence and bloodshed. In later work these things will all achieve their high points. It is fun to see them in a less developed but more exploratory state.Product details

Correct understanding of Melville and particularly his Moby-Dick is impossible without Mardi - highly recommended for all students of American literaturę.
The first half of the book was quite believable but it dragged on when they landed in an unknown group of islands.
